Combating Driving While Intoxicated
Protecting lives through collaborative enforcement.
Combating Driving While Intoxicated:
Driving while intoxicated remains one of the leading causes of preventable deaths and serious injuries in El Paso County. Recognizing the need for stronger enforcement and prevention efforts, Sheriff Ugarte made addressing DWIs a top priority of his administration.

Under his leadership, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office established its first-ever multi-agency DWI Task Force in April 2025 — a major milestone in the county’s ongoing fight against impaired driving. This coordinated effort brings together local, state, and regional law enforcement partners to conduct monthly operations aimed at identifying and removing impaired drivers from our roadways.

Since its launch, the task force has made hundreds of arrests, helping reduce the number of intoxicated drivers and prevent potential tragedies. Beyond enforcement, the Sheriff’s Office continues to focus on public education and awareness, working with community organizations and schools to promote responsible choices and prevent impaired driving before it occurs.
Sheriff Ugarte remains committed to ensuring that every driver, passenger, and pedestrian in El Paso County can travel safely — because even one impaired driver is one too many.
